Tilak Varma

Indian cricketer

The son of an electrician from Hyderabad, Tilak Varma didn’t have the best resources at his disposal but what he had was an innate talent for batting. Varma was spotted by a childhood coach playing tennis ball cricket, and the coach took him under his wings. In his early teens, the southpaw used to travel 40kms to and fro for practice at the Legala Cricket Academy, all sponsored by his childhood coach Salim Bayash.

Tilak Varma: Fearless “Lone Warrior”

Tilak Varma – The Rising Star of Indian Cricket

About Tilak Varma

At just 21 years old, Tilak Varma has already established himself as one of the most promising talents in Indian cricket. Hailing from Hyderabad, his journey is a testament to resilience and raw talent. Born into humble beginnings, his father lacked the resources to send him for private coaching. It was his first coach, Salam Bayash , who stepped in, covering his fees and equipment costs, ensuring that cricket did not lose this prodigious talent.

Known for his impeccable technique, calm temperament, and explosive shot-making ability, Tilak’s rise through the ranks has been nothing short of meteoric. Rohit Sharma, during the 2022 IPL season, famously predicted that Tilak would soon become an all-format player for India , a prophecy that seems well on its way to fruition.

Domestic Cricket – The Foundation of Greatness

  • First-Class Debut (2018–19):
Tilak made his first-class debut for Hyderabad at the age of 16, showcasing maturity beyond his years.
  • Under-19 World Cup (2020):
Represented India in all six games during their run to the final in South Africa, scoring 86 runs in three innings and displaying glimpses of his potential on the global stage.
  • Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (2021–22):
Finished as the second-highest run-scorer for Hyderabad with 215 runs in seven innings at a blistering strike rate of 147.26 , catching the attention of IPL franchises.

His performances in domestic cricket highlighted his adaptability and consistency, setting the stage for his entry into the big leagues.

Indian Premier League (IPL) – A Star in the Making

The IPL became the platform where Tilak Varma truly announced himself to the world.

  • IPL 2022:
    • Picked by Mumbai Indians (MI) for INR 1.70 crore at the mega auction.
    • Played all 14 games in his debut season, scoring 397 runs at an average of 36.09 and a strike rate of 131.02 , establishing himself as a key member of the side.
  • IPL 2023:
    • Elevated his game further, amassing 343 runs in 11 games at an impressive average of 42.87 and a strike rate of 164.11 , solidifying his reputation as one of the brightest young talents in the league.
  • IPL 2024:
    • Recorded his best season in terms of runs, finishing with 416 runs at a strike rate of 149.64 , including three half-centuries, ensuring his retention ahead of the 2025 season.

Tilak’s ability to play match-winning knocks under pressure, coupled with his fearless strokeplay, has made him a fan favorite and a crucial asset for Mumbai Indians.

International Cricket – The Next Big Thing

Tilak Varma’s stellar performances in the IPL paved the way for his international debut, marking the beginning of what promises to be a storied career.

  • T20I Debut (2023):
    • Made his debut against the West Indies at Tarouba, announcing his arrival with two consecutive sixes off the second and third balls he faced.
  • ODI Debut:
    • Followed his T20I debut with an ODI cap, showcasing his versatility across formats.
  • Challenges:
    • A couple of freak hand injuries in 2024 briefly stalled his progress, but his resilience ensured he remained on track for greater achievements.

With his technical prowess, adaptability, and temperament, Tilak is widely regarded as a future mainstay in India’s batting lineup across all formats.

Playing Style – Elegance Meets Explosiveness

Tilak Varma’s batting is a blend of elegance and explosiveness. His ability to play both orthodox and unorthodox shots with equal ease makes him a nightmare for bowlers.

  • Known for his calm demeanor and quick reflexes , Tilak thrives in high-pressure situations, often turning the tide in his team’s favor.
  • His strike rotation and boundary-hitting ability make him a reliable anchor in the middle order while also possessing the firepower to accelerate when needed.

Legacy and Impact

Tilak Varma is more than just a cricketer; he is a symbol of hope for aspiring players from modest backgrounds. His journey from Hyderabad’s streets to the grand stages of the IPL and international cricket is an inspiration to millions.

  • Records and Achievements:
    • Youngest player to score 300+ runs in consecutive IPL seasons (2022–2023).
    • Fastest to reach 1,000 IPL runs among players from his batch.
    • One of the few players to hit sixes off his first two scoring balls in international cricket.

Beyond his stats, Tilak’s humility and work ethic have earned him admiration from teammates and fans alike. Under the mentorship of legends like Rohit Sharma, he is poised to become a cornerstone of Indian cricket in the years to come.

Why Tilak Stands Out

Tilak Varma is not just a batsman; he is a phenomenon in the making. His ability to seamlessly transition between formats, coupled with his fearless approach and rock-solid technique, sets him apart from his peers. As he continues to break records and shatter expectations, the cricketing world eagerly awaits the next chapter in the Tilak Varma story—a chapter that promises greatness, glory, and countless unforgettable moments.

MI vs SRH Highlights, IPL 2025: Rohit , Boult Shine As MI Outplay SRH For 4th Consecutive Win

SRH vs MI Highlights, IPL 2025: Rohit Sharma and Trent Boult stole the show with their terrific performances as Mumbai Indians outplayed Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 wickets at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday. Trent Boult registered a four-wicket haul (4 for 26) as MI restricted SRH to 143 for 8 after their captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to bowl first. Heinrich Klaasen scored 71 runs off 44 balls to help SRH get something on the board, but that failed to trouble MI, thanks to Rohit Sharma’s second consecutive fifty. He slammed 71 off 44 balls to seal the win for MI. Suryakumar’s 40 not out off 19 also helped the team’s cause. This was MI’s fourth consecutive victory in IPL 2025.

SRH VS MI

Sunrisers Hyderabad Preview

Sunrisers Hyderabad have had a rough run so far—just two wins from seven games. When they’ve come out on top, it’s been because their batters blew the doors off the opposition. But if the top order falls early, they tend to fold fast and never really recover.

That’s what they’ll be hoping to avoid when they host MI. If Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head get going early, like they’ve done in a couple of games, it sets them up nicely for a big total. Heinrich Klaasen, Ishan Kishan, and Nitish Kumar follow, and while all three haven’t fired this season, there’s still confidence that Klaasen’s power game can turn up here.

Aniket Verma has been a bright spot. He’s been clearing the ropes in the back end of the innings and doing it with a strike rate of 187. They’ll enjoy the batting conditions in Hyderabad, and MI’s bowlers are going to feel the pressure.

The trouble for SRH has been with the ball. Shami and Cummins have been expensive and off rhythm lately, leaking runs at the wrong times. Harshal Patel has stepped up, using his slower balls to pick up wickets in the middle overs. Eshan Malinga has looked sharp too, always hunting for breakthroughs.

Zeeshan Ansari’s another name to watch—four wickets in five matches, and he’s been effective in the middle phases.

Mumbai Indians Preview

Mumbai Indians have bounced back well after a rough stretch, stacking up three wins in a row to climb to sixth with eight points from eight games. In their latest game, they chased down 177 against CSK at home without breaking a sweat—getting it done in just 15.4 overs with nine wickets in hand.

They’ve finally clicked as a unit, with contributions spread across the board. The top order—Rickelton, Jacks, and Rohit—still have their shaky moments, but are putting up enough runs up front. Rohit’s 76* off 45 against CSK was a much-needed return to form, and it sets a good tone going forward.

The middle and lower-middle order have been where the real push is coming from. Suryakumar Yadav has been in prime touch—333 runs in eight matches at 55.50 and a strike rate of 162.43. He looked effortless in his last outing, smashing 68* off 30, and will be confident heading into Hyderabad. Expect more of the same.

Tilak Varma’s been looking sharp too, with two fifties in his last three knocks. He’s another batter who can tilt the game.

Towards the back end, Hardik Pandya and Naman Dhir can cause damage if they get enough balls. Both are capable of clearing the ropes in quick time.

Pandya’s also been handy with the ball—he’s taken 11 wickets and has done a decent job containing runs with an economy of 8.90. Deepak Chahar has six wickets so far but tends to leak runs at the death.

Trent Boult continues to deliver early on and at the end. Bumrah’s return has clearly lifted their bowling. With Boult and Bumrah closing out innings, they’ve got real control. Santner has chipped in with tight spells through the middle and should get good grip on this surface.

SRH vs MI Pitch Report

Historically, teams batting first have a slight edge at this venue, with a win percentage of 54% compared to 46% for teams chasing. The average first innings score is around 188 runs, while the second innings average is approximately 174 runs.If pitch number two is used for this game, expect runs galore as both teams will aim for at least 220+ totals. We’ve seen this surface twice already this season – the first time, Sunrisers Hyderabad hammered 286-6 while batting first and won by 44 runs. The second time around, they chased down 246 with 1.3 overs to spare. The challenge for SRH comes on slower pitches, where their batting unit tends to struggle badly as they’re not built for those types of wickets.

SRH vs MI Weather Report

The weather is expected to be sunny, with minimal chances of rain interrupting the proceedings. Sunny 26°C, 48% humidity, wind speed 11 km/h.

Match Preview

Mumbai Indians (MI) will take on their arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 38th match of the IPL 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The teams started this season by playing against each other on March 23 in Chennai. This will be their second game of the season, and MI will be looking forward to taking revenge for the first game.

CSK are at the bottom of the points table with just two wins in seven matches. Despite winning their last match, there was no change in the points table because of their lower run rate. Moreover, losing five back-to-back games did the real destruction for them. However, they still have a good chance to bounce back from here on by winning five of the seven matches left.

MI’s position is almost similar, but they have won three out of seven matches. They still have to win four more matches to qualify for the playoffs. They had a convincing win in the previous match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Mumbai. They will be playing consecutive matches on their home ground, so that should be an advantage for them.

Wankhede Stadium Pitch Report

The Wankhede Stadium pitch is red soil and this 22-yard strip is considered a paradise for batsmen. Initially, the bowlers get some bounce, and if they bowl with the right line and length, they can prove deadly even on a pitch considered helpful for batsmen. Due to the short boundaries, scoring runs against spinners is also not easy. So far, 118 T20 matches have been played at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, with the team batting first winning 55 matches and the team chasing the target winning 63 times.

Mumbai Pitch Statistics

The average first innings score on the Wankhede Stadium pitch is 178 runs, while the second innings sees approximately 156 runs. However, given the way matches have been played this season, at least 190 runs can be expected from the first innings here. In the second innings, dew can hamper the fielding team’s performance. Therefore, the team winning the toss will prefer to bowl first. The match is a night game, so the sea breeze could assist fast bowlers.

So far this season, 3 matches have been played at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, and Mumbai has won 2 out of 3, while they were defeated by Royal Challengers Bangalore in one. Mumbai has defeated teams like Kolkata and Hyderabad here and will want to maintain that momentum on Sunday.

Head-to-Head Record

MI and CSK have played five matches against each other so far, with the former winning 18 and the latter 20.
